As Bluegnomes says, late pre facelift a good option. The very early 212s has a 5 speed box in the 2.1 and a lower output/worse emissions in the 3l. Worth checking the numbers so you avoid. Late pre facelift, good history and toys sounds like best value. Ash
the 97 felt the lightest, and the motor revved more freely. so my butt dyno thought it was quick. downsides = 97, pre facelift. the post facelift goodies are worth way more than the lightness/quickness IMO the 2001 was the oldest one I had (my dads car), and I dont remember how it drove anymore
Overall. BMW barely made any changes to the 8 Series, inside or out. Thought, looks were never its problem, so that’s not really a big deal. 380 posts · Joined 2005. #6 · Mar 12, 2015. IMO, the pre-facelift hasn't aged very well - it just looks a bit too sad with its drooping nose and sad eyes. The facelift has worked wonders for her, much more purposeful and worth the slight premium. The profile of the body line is just so handsome.

To my eyes, the pre-facelift cars look better in darker metallic shades, whereas the the facelift car suits lighter colours better.
